The Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho is reportedly of interest.

He was formerly praised as “incredible” by one Pep Guardiola.

On June 9, 2024, the Sunday Mirror (page 73) reported that

Sunderland was considering a bid for the 27-year-old.

After departing Manchester City in 2017, Iheanacho spent seven years with the Foxes,

winning the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Championship along the way.

However, he was released from the team when his contract expired.

It is unlikely to send hearts racing throughout Tyneside to sign a player on a free transfer who only managed five goals in the Championship the previous season.

Context still seems vital, though.

Those goals came from just five second-tier starts in the previous campaign,

and Iheanacho isn’t expected to be Sunderland first choice.

In the Premier League the previous season,

only Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool scored more goals.

Even yet, there is a serious problem with their forwards’ dependability.

but he has never been able to stay healthy for an extended period of time.

In 196 games,

Iheanacho has scored 42 goals in the Premier League.

More significantly, since starting to play English football in 2015,

he has only missed four games due to injury (via Transfermarkt).

Sunderland could do much worse as an inexpensive backup.
